#artificialselfie, 2016

As smart devices and social networks entered our lives, hyper-connectivity has made our world move faster than ever, with technology shaping the way we relate to other human beings, creating new languages and shaping our behaviors through small gestures and everyday habits.

The selfie phenomenon is a clear example of a gesture that every internet social being has adopted due to the mobile devices and social media’s way of working, and its impact on society has been extremely high.

On one hand, we teach machines to understand us, giving them the ability to replicate gestures and habits in a surprisingly human way. On the other hand, as we all seem to repeat the same behaviors with a given technology, we ourselves start acting as predictable machines.

“Over recent years tiny automated and nonsensical beings have infiltrated our daily life via twitter and email. They have taken delight in agitation by imitating human behaviours – from telling jokes to online-dating. These small computer programmes are called bots (derived from the word robot) and their repetitive and often simple actions have brought fun to – and often poked fun at – the Internet platforms that now mediate our lives.” Excerpt from the website of the exhibition.

A selfie is a paradigmatic way to prove to the contemporary world that one exists.

The robot expresses this need by taking selfies of itself and sharing them on Instagram, repeating the same sequence tirelessly, over and over again, at a pace of one selfie every three minutes.

It uses a mirror to reflect its image, including the audience as part of its digital life.
